Design of Frequency Selective Windows for Improved Indoor Outdoor Communication

Abstract: The use of low emissivity windows degrades radio communication. This paper presents design, manufacturing and test measurements for an energy saving window that is transparent to GSM, GPS and 3G radio wave frequencies. A frequency selective structure (FSS) is used in the metallic coating of the window to provide the needed transparency that ranges from 900 MHz to 2 GHz. The periodic pattern used for the FSS is of the aperture type and the elements are hexagon loops. FSS simulations are performed using two diff… Show more

“…These are called low-emissivity or energy-saving widows since the metallic oxide coating on one side of the glass can reect most of the incident infrared power [1,3,5,7]. This coated glass acts as a lter for electromagnetic radiations in the infrared region, while being totally transparent to the visible part of the spectrum.…”

“…Since this FSS has to be aperture type, it has to be designed carefully in such a way that least amount of the metal oxide layer is removed from the glass surface to reduce the degradation of thermal insulation. Before the design procedure of FSS is initiated, one has to measure the precise values of relative permittivity and conductivity as opposed to what was approximated in [1]. Moreover, to obtain a practical FSS design, the electrical properties of the metallic oxide layer has to be carefully calculated.…”

“…The glass fabrication for construction purposes has recently been subjected to a huge evolution; classic windows have been replaced by frequency selective [12] and energy saving [13] windows. Window modelling is thus an important issue in wave propagation simulators.…”

“…1a, b, it is evident that the low-pass and high-pass FSS structures are complementary surfaces. It means that they cover the entire surface jointly (Gustafsson et al 2005). Moreover, the transmission and reflection properties of low-pass and high-pass FSS structures are complimentary to each other as per Babinate's principle.…”
