Design of functionally graded dental multilayers

Abstract: A B S T R A C T This paper presents the results of a computational and experimental effort to develop crack-resistant dental multilayers that are inspired by the functionally graded dentoenamel-junction (DEJ) structure that occurs between dentin and enamel in natural teeth. The complex structures of natural teeth and ceramic crowns are idealized using flatlayered configurations. The potential effects of teeth-on-teeth contact are then modelled using finite element simulations of Hertzian contact. The resulting… Show more

“…Development of implants based on biocompatible FGMs for various applications in medical and dental fields has been emphasized [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15]. FGM permits the integration of different materials without creating severe internal stresses and combines various unlike properties into a single material system (Figure 1).…”

“…Rahbar and Soboyejo [13] used computational and experimental effort to develop crack-resistant multilayered crowns that are inspired by the functionally graded DEJ structure. The calculated stress distributions revealed that the highest stress was concentrated at the ceramic outer layer of crown which then was reduced significantly toward the DEJ with the use of bioinspired functionally graded architecture.…”

“…During this period, his passion for bamboo stimulated a significant effort on its study as a source of bioinspiration for the design of robust structural materials at the nano-, micro-, and macroscales. 39 Ghavami inspired the author to engage a group of Princeton students in the development of a bamboo road bicycle (see Figure 8), which was subsequently commercialized by Sol Cycles Inc. and Boo Bicycles Inc. The late Ezekiel Odeh also fabricated bamboo bicycles in Nigeria and Ghana.…”
