Design of novel universal converter for integration of solar and wind energy for AC and DC load

Abstract: Power generation through renewable sources using a multistage power conversion process was plagued with efficiency and reliability issues. It led to the evolvement of a novel universal converter for the simultaneous interfacing of solar and wind energy. Solar energy is extracted using a multiphase boost converter, while a 2n converter with a switch reluctance generator has been used for wind energy extraction. In this paper, a novel universal converter is used to integrate both solar and wind energies, which w… Show more

“…Many industrial applications in the energy sector, like adjustable speed drives (ASDs) and grid integration of renewable energy sources (RESs), need high‐performance control of several voltage‐source converters (VSCs) 1–4 . As connected sources/loads might experience different operating characteristics, the autonomous control of these sources/loads is an essential requirement that should be met by VSCs 5 .…”

“…Many industrial applications in the energy sector, like adjustable speed drives (ASDs) and grid integration of renewable energy sources (RESs), need high-performance control of several voltage-source converters (VSCs). [1][2][3][4] As connected sources/loads might experience different operating characteristics, the autonomous control of these sources/loads is an essential requirement that should be met by VSCs. 5 In a conventional structure for RESs' grid integration, where each source has an individual converter, this requirement can be achieved regardless of the converter's switching method.…”

“…Despite the remarkable advantages of these sources, the uncertainty of their generated power is a challenge that needs to be considered in order to deliver a reliable energy 3 . To deal with this challenge, the simultaneous grid integration of these sources is presented 4,5 . In the traditional structure, each source needs its proper power electronics interface to be integrated into the grid, imposing a high installation cost on the utility or owner.…”

“…Different configurations for hybrid PV/WT energy systems have been reported by the literature 5,7–13 . In Chen et al, 7 a multi‐input inverter‐based configuration for grid integration of PV and WT is presented, proposing the simplicity, fewer conversion stage, and lower installation cost in comparison with the conventional topologies.…”
