Design of Periodic Shorting-Vias for Suppressing the Fundamental Mode in Microstrip Leaky-Wave Antennas

Abstract: The design of periodic shorting-vias for suppressing the fundamental mode in microstrip leaky-wave antennas is studied in this paper. When a microstrip leaky-wave antenna is loaded with periodic shorting-vias along the centerline, the fundamental mode has a stop band in which the mode is strongly attenuated. The stop band is investigated to best match the (leaky-wave) antenna-mode region of the first higher mode. An approximate formula is derived to estimate the start of the stop band. When the fundamental mod… Show more

“…Microstrip leaky‐wave antennas (MLWAs) [1–15] have received much interest because of their advantages of simple structure, low profile and easy fabrication. A MLWA usually has an ability for beam scanning with frequency, so it can be used in radar system, wireless location and so on.…”

“…The mode natures in printed wave‐guiding structures have received extensive investigations [1–23]. In a microstrip line (without shorting vias), the fundamental (EH 0 ) mode is an even bound wave without cutoff, while a higher mode has a cutoff and is a leaky mode near the cutoff [1].…”

“…SUMMARY Figure 3.22: The current along the antenna with two additional loading wires at MHz. Nowadays, the periodic structure based material is more and more frequently used in the microstrip antenna designs to replace the traditional substrate materials [57][58][59][60]. This material can be used to improve the operating performances of antenna, such as its radiation efficiency, gain, and impedance bandwidth.…”
