Design of Planar Monopole Pulse Antenna for Ultra-Wideband Radiocommunication Systems

Abstract

A complex approach to computer-aided design and investigation of the frequency characteristics of the ultra-wideband (UWB) pulse antenna is presented in the paper. The base of design antenna algorithm is worked out. A planar monopole pulse ultra-wideband antenna for use in radiocommunication systems is proposed. Design of the antenna is discussed and frequency characteristics, current and near electromagnetic field distributions are presented. Obtained results may be effectively used for the evaluation of EMC properties of UWB radiocommunication systems. Introduction Ultra-wideband (UWB) radiocommunication systems have recently received more and more attention as a medium for a high-data-rate short-range wireless link [1][2][3]. The Federal Communication Commission (FCC) allowed UWB communication in the 3.1-10.6GHz band and using signals having a -10dB bandwidth greater than 500MHz and maximum EIRP spectral density of -41.3 dBm/MHz [1]. There are main advantages of UWB radio systems: extremely low power consumption, high data rates, and simple hardware configuration. The most interesting approach of the UWB radio system is socalled impulse radio. Its basic concept is to transmit and receive very short electromagnetic pulses (few tens of picoseconds to few nanoseconds in duration) with corresponding spectrum range to few GHz.The wide band of UWB signals, despite benefits makes often a problem for design of the base elements of radiocommunication systems.There are many publications about design and properties of UWB radio systems in last several years. Bases of structures of UWB systems and overview of the whole UWB subject: history, standards, generation, transmitting, radiation, propagation and receiving of UWB signals are described in [2][3][4]. It is published a special prototyping platform for an investigation of UWB communication (without detailed time and frequency characteristics) and frequency-and time-domain characteristics of patch antenna (range from 3 to 6GHz only) for use in medical WBAN (Body) systems.Very interesting material about property radiation of UWB signals with the space length much lesser from physical length of the given travel-wave antenna is described in [5]. Practical applications of ultra-wideband radars for different technical and scientific problems are presented in [6].However it is still very actually to design and investigate time and frequency characteristics of the ultrawideband pulse (monopole and planar, too) antenna for use in entire WPAN frequency band 3.1-10.6GHz.The first results of our investigations of this problem are represented in [7][8][9][10][11].Time-domain and frequency characteristics of different ultra-wideband signals for use in radiocommunication systems are published in [7,8].
