Design of Sobel operator based image edge detection algorithm on FPGA

Abstract: Real-time image processing applications requires processing on large data of pixels in a given timing constraints.Reconfigurable device like FPGAs have emerged as promising solutions for reducing execution times by deploying parallelism techniques in image processing algorithms. Implementation of highly parallel system architecture, parallel access of large internal memory banks and optimization of processing element for applications makes FPGA an ideal device for image processing system. Edge detection is bas… Show more

“…Both LOG and Canny provide better result in the image with noise [1].In gray level image, each pixel is represented by 8 bit. So, gray level values vary from 0 to 255 where 0 value stands for black color and 255 value stands for white color [2].Prewitt, Sobel and LOG Operators can be applied for color images [3].Canny is widely used for gray image processing. This algorithm is unable to deal with color images.…”

“…This edge detector performs a 2-D spatial gradient measurement on an image and so emphasizes regions of high spatial frequency that correspond to edges. Generally, it is used to find the approximate absolute gradient magnitude at each point in an input gray scale image [2]. This operator consists of a pair of 3×3 convolution kernels as shown in Figure 1.…”

“…It is also easy to implement the Sobel algorithm on the FPGA development kit. Sobel edge detection algorithm is a scanning process with 3x3 size and matrices on the image matrix [21][22][23]. and matrices are given in the equation 1.…”

“…This system consumes as low as 6.76% and 3.28% of energy compared to CPU and GPU-based designs respectively. In the literature, many other articles can be found, such as [28][29][30], describing the usage of FPGAs to support image processing, in real time. The execution times and/or the energy consumption, may justify the use of FPGAs to implement terrain classification and feature extraction algorithms.…”
