Design of Sustainable Agricultural-Based Biomass Electrification Model in the Islands Area: Prospect of Bamboo Biomass

Abstract: In 2020, it is projected that the number of households in the Kepulauan Mentawai Regency will reach 22,534 units in which 9,471 units have received electricity from the State Electricity Company (PLN). By the end of 2020, as many as 1,244 households will be targeted to get electricity from the bamboo biomass power plant that has been built. Thus until the end of 2020, there were still 11,819 household units that would not yet get electricity. The Kepulauan Mentawai Regency Government targets that by the end of… Show more

“…The Global Energy Assessment anticipates that a substantial increase in the use of lignocellulosic material and agricultural leftovers will result in a significant expansion of bioenergy, reaching between 80 and 140 EJ by the year 2050. Similar to what was said by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, a similar rise in the percentage of bioenergy might occur depending on the climate goals pursued and the policy instruments used [54], [55]. More recently, the European Union (EU) has released a new regulation to promote renewable energy use [56]- [58].…”

“…Even though biomass energy has the potential to be a source of renewable energy, the industry faces several severe hurdles that prevent it from being widely adopted and from being scalable [330], [331]. One of the most significant challenges is the rivalry for biomass resources that exists between other industries, such as the production of food and the preservation of land [332], [333].…”

“…In addition to urbanization, choking emissions, population growth, and industrial development are all expanding rapidly (Minh Loy et al, 2020;Sitompul and Sinaga, 2020). This is resulting in an urgent need for energy, which is another aspect of the continual expansion and development that is taking place (Aisman et al, 2020;Ilham et al, 2022;Villegas et al, 2020). Coal, petroleum, and natural gas are examples of traditional energy sources that continue to meet the bulk of the world's energy needs (Bello and Solarin, 2022;Bortnowska, 2009).…”
