Design Optimisation and Performance Evaluation of a Rare-Earth-Free Permanent Magnet Assisted Synchronous Reluctance Machine for Electric Vehicle Traction

Abstract: The paper focuses on the design optimisation and performance evaluation of low remanence Permanent Magnet Assisted Synchronous Reluctance Machines (PMA SynRM) against driving cycles. It demonstrates the impact of different driving cycles, such as the NEDC and Artemis Urban, on the design and attainable energy efficiency of PMA SynRM considered for traction applications through the use of design case studies. The parameter optimisation trends against these characteristically different driving cycles are coheren… Show more

“…Avrupa Bilim ve Teknoloji Dergisi e-ISSN: 2148-2683 108 The most important features of the motors to be used in electric vehicles are high torque at the time of first movement and low power consumption and efficiency at high speeds. Therefore, the motor drivers to be used for EVs must also be capable of providing these requirements (Lazari et al, 2014). While selecting the motor, it is necessary to know the max voltage, current and load values.…”

“…Therefore, motor drive requirements for EVs include high torque at low speed for fast starting, and high power at high speeds for cruising. For urban driving it is also necessary high efficiency in the low torque and low speed region [45]. Low rotor inertia and smooth torque are also valuable, since low inertia allows making the driving more comfortable, especially for direct drive motors, whereas a smooth torque reduces vibrations and wear in mechanical components [9].…”
