Design Optimization of a Synchronous Homopolar Motor with Ferrite Magnets for Subway Train

Abstract: Brushless synchronous homopolar machines (SHM) have long been used as highly reliable motors and generators with an excitation winding on the stator. However, a significant disadvantage that limits their use in traction applications is the reduced specific torque due to the incomplete use of the rotor surface. One possible way to improve the torque density of SHMs is to add inexpensive ferrite magnets in the rotor slots. This paper presents the results of optimizing the performances of an SHM with ferrite magn… Show more

“…The experimental motor is a pre-production prototype of an IPMSM, which was developed for automotive compressors. It was developed while prioritizing reliability and cost efficiency, with the help of recommendations provided in [46][47][48]. The motor parameters are provided in Table 1, and it should be noted that the motor inductances and rotor flux are almost stable and vary less than 5% in the whole operational range.…”

“…However, in electric vehicles that require a wide CPSR, SynRMs have a reduced inverter utilization factor, which significantly increases the power rating and cost of the inverter power modules [6]. This drawback can be overcome, as well as the dimensions of the motor can be reduced by adding inexpensive ferrite magnets to the rotor [14]. Ferrite-assisted SynRMs (FaSynRMs) with high rotor magnetic anisotropy have proven themselves in pumping applications in which a wide CPSR is not required [18][19][20].…”
