Design, Organization and Management of a Controlled Population Screening Study for Detection of Colorectal Neoplasia: Attendance Rates in the NORCCAP Study (Norwegian Colorectal Cancer Prevention)

Abstract: The present FSIFS&FOBT screening study obtained a high acceptance rate for both screening modalities. The attendance rate was stable throughout the trial, suggesting an acceptable model for management of future countrywide screening.

“…Sigmoidoscopy was found to be acceptable, feasible, and safe in ongoing trials in the United Kingdom, Italy, Norway, and the United States (26)(27)(28)(29). Acceptability and feasibility may be lower for colonoscopy, partly due to limited resources in highly qualified personnel (30), but pertinent data are sparse.…”

“…Control for multiple potential confounders only had a minor effect on estimates of ORs, but one can never rule out residual confounding by imperfectly measured confounders or unmeasured confounders by an observational study like this one. The results of the randomized controlled trials, which are under way in Europe and the United States (26)(27)(28)(29), will have to be awaited to obtain more definitive answers on the risk reduction that may be achieved by endoscopic screening.…”

“…Recruitment took place from 1999 to 2001 at 2 hospitals (screening centers), one in each catchment area. Several lifestyle variables were recorded, and blood samples were collected (13 ). The study was approved by the Regional Ethics Committee and the Data Inspectorate.…”

“…39,40 In the absence of evidence from randomized trials, however, several countries have been reluctant to recommend endoscopic screening procedures. Trials are currently underway in the United Kingdom, 41 Italy 42 and in Norway 43,44 to examine the efficacy of a single flexible sigmoidoscopy screen at around 60 years of age. 41,42 The efficacy of a 5-year screening interval is being examined in the US, 45 although it will be several years before data on colorectal cancer incidence and mortality become available.…”
