Designing a lab course from the perspective of flow theory

Abstract: Abstract. Students' frustration could be a crucial factor preventing successful implementation of inquiry-based learning environments. Here we describe the results of improving students' attitudes towards open-ended ISLE labs where students design their own experiments. We apply the "flow" framework to analyze students' responses to the survey concerning their experience during the labs. We describe the revisions of the course based on this analysis that resulted in a significant improvement of students' attit… Show more

“…The heart flow state is only generated when the individual skill level matches the challenge and difficulty of the task. The heart channel model has been used to determine flow in a large number of empirical studies, and several researchers have developed scales to measure flow (Karelina, 2015). Kasl & Cobb (1966) first proposed the concept of health behavior.…”

“…At the end of the semester we asked students three survey questions with a Likert scale from 1 to 7 [38]. The questions asked students about their perception of the challenge level of the labs, about their perceived skillfulness and about their general experience of enjoyment during the labs.…”

“…A person in flow loses selfconsciousness (p. 62), experiences a transformation of time (p. 66), stretches their skills ( [9], p. 816), and experiences a higher quality of life, even while working (p. 821). Flow has begun to be examined in PER as a measure of student positive experience during laboratory [15]. Because flow is so wellstudied as a psychological phenomenon, and its prerequisite conditions so well-understood, we believe that over time we will develop the ability to coach students effectively at identifying and stimulating flow experiences for themselves.…”
