Designing a Pilot Study Protocol to Test a Male Alcohol Use and Intimate Partner Violence Reduction Intervention in India: Beautiful Home

Abstract: Introduction: Evidence suggests alcohol consumption is correlated with intimate partner violence (IPV) making alcohol reduction interventions a promising method for reducing IPV. While both financial incentive and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) interventions in high-income countries, respectively, have effectively reduced alcohol consumption and IPV perpetration among men, little evidence exists demonstrating that these approaches can work in a low-resource setting. Methods: The objective of this study is t… Show more

“…We employed Datta and Mullainathan’s [ 6 ] behavioral design approach to systematically design the interventions. This approach has been used to address a wide range of public health challenges in low- and middle-income countries including gender-based violence, reproductive health, and neglected tropical diseases [ 7 9 ]. First, we defined the problem and then conducted qualitative, formative research to identify the behavioral barriers inhibiting the provision of RMC.…”

“…O'Farrell et al (2004) and Schumm et al (2018) more recently demonstrated the effectiveness of individually based therapy and behavioral couple therapy for IPV in a substance-using population. Hartmann et al (2018Hartmann et al ( , 2020 in a pilot study demonstrated the effectiveness of an integrated intervention combining elements of CBT, behavioral economics, and contingency management in couples with heavy alcohol use and IPV in India.…”

“…Among other approaches, metacognitive interpersonal therapy (MIT) with a focus on maladaptive schemas is a useful treatment for IPV (Pasetto et al, 2021). Marital and family therapy are also indicated for patients with Alcohol Dependence Syndrome and IPV (Hartmann et al, 2018(Hartmann et al, ,2020McCrady et al, 2016;O'Farrell et al, 2004;Schumm et al, 2018). However, it calls for a careful assessment of violence to ensure that it does not escalate during the course of therapy.…”
