Designing Airport Interiors with 3D Visualizations

Abstract: Understandings of user-centered design incorporate the need to include users and stakeholders in the design process from early on, employing visual and 'enactment' principles and approaches. Virtual Reality (VR) and 3D visualizations offer such opportunities for enhanced 'enactments' of proposed designs through immersion. Within PASSME H2020 European project, 3D design visualizations for novel concepts for an airport interior were developed and tested early on with users to identify the best interior design pr… Show more

“…Particularly for designing skills, IVR has had positive effects. Researchers have demonstrated the effectiveness of immersive environments for designing airport interiors (Kefalidou, D’Cruz, Castro, & Marcelino, 2019), creative form‐making in visual art (Keefe, 2009), designing DNA molecules (Schkolne, Ishii, & Schroder, 2004), and evaluating machinery designs (Aromaa & Väänänen, 2016). In these studies, the purpose of IVR was often the assessment of a design prototype or communication with customers.…”

“…Additionally, XR supports true-to-life simulations, which are as effective as corresponding experiences in the real world [5]. Studies have demonstrated the effectiveness of XR platforms for designing airport interiors [6], evaluating the ergonomics of machinery [7], as well as creative formmaking in visual art [8]. Hence, a consensus in design communities is forming about the new opportunities XR platforms might bring, particularly for experience design [9].…”
