Designing an Automatic Control System for the Improved Functioning of a Solar Wall with Phase Change Material (PCM)

Abstract: Solar walls constitute an important green architectural feature that positively contributes to energy saving in buildings. Different configurations may be proposed, such as, solar wall with Phase Change Material (PCM), composite solar wall, photovoltaic solar wall, zigzag solar wall, and solar hybrid wall. Being environmentally friendly, these passive solar components can provide thermal comfort and help save energy. Their disadvantages include principally unpredictable heat transfer, heat losses by night for … Show more

“…Even though some studies [95,101] investigate a partition under real weather conditions, the real effect on thermal comfort and energy savings within a typical construction fully realizable. Control systems for cooling/heating play an important role in energy management and are complimentary to PCM applications; this was recommended by Berardi and Soudian [72] and implemented by Favier et al [85].…”

“…Trombe wall systems can also be added to renovations, and suitable PCM integration and control systems can enhance their performance. Favier et al [85] prepared an automatic control system for a Trombe wall equipped with PCM located in a renovation located in Croisilles, France. The study was focused on diminishing the disadvantages behind such systems that are summarized to be: unpredictable heat transfer, night heat losses, and the thermosiphon phenomenon.…”

“…PCMs are considered as excellent solutions for attenuating overheating phenomena by applying the heat storage principle. Favier et al 97 conducted an experimental study on the energy management of a PCM-based solar wall. The vertical section of the solar wall is shown in Figure 28.…”
