Designing and Fabricating Nano-Structured and Micro-Structured Radiation Shields for Protection against CBCT Exposure

Abstract: Researchers have always been interested in finding new and effective materials for protection against radiation. This experimental study aimed to design and fabricate new types of nano-material and micro-material based shields against the ionizing effect of cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) X-rays. To fabricate a flexible prototype, we added dioctyl phthalate (DOP) oil to emulsion polyvinyl chloride (PVC) powder. The paste was mixed and dispersed. Then, nano- and micro-powders of WO3 and Bi2O3 were added to… Show more

“…However, the radiation dose caused by CBCT scan cannot be ignored, and a large number of CBCT‐assisted position setup may lead to a significant increase in the incidence of secondary cancer in patients. 2 Magnetic resonance guidance has advantages, such as high soft tissue resolution and no ionizing radiation but has disadvantages, such as high equipment cost, long imaging time, 3 and no real‐time monitoring. SGRT projects a speckle pattern on the patient by using optical light and cameras with separate camera pods are used to detect the pattern and map the patient's surface.…”

“…It can provide three‐dimensional (3D) anatomical structure information of patients, and it is easy to register with planning CT images. However, the radiation dose caused by CBCT scan cannot be ignored, and a large number of CBCT‐assisted position setup may lead to a significant increase in the incidence of secondary cancer in patients 2 . “…Among these is the possibility of the existence of image artifacts especially following metal restoration, the lack of ability to precisely depict the soft tissue’s internal structure, and reduced accuracy of the assigned Hounsfield unit (HU) used for standardized quantification of bone density [ 37 ]. It is worth mentioning that nano-structured radiation shielding materials are effective in the attenuation of X-ray energy [ 38 ].…”

“…In addition, working long hours with heavy equipment is inconvenient for technicians. Inhalation is another risk factor, as floating microparticles in the air has been reported [13,14]. Lead exposure may also induce several biological complications depending on the level and the duration of exposure.…”

“…Several nanomaterials, such as tungsten, bismuth, phthalonitrile, molybdenum, carbon allotropes (graphene, graphene oxide, etc.) and their composites, have been used as an effective radiation-shielding material [14,[21][22][23].…”
