Designing and manufacturing of a drop weight impact test machine

Abstract: A state of the art instrumented Drop Weight Impact Tester Machine was developed in Iran University of Science and Technology which measures the energy absorption of composite materials under impact load. The output of the machine is used to draw load-time graph and calculate the amount of energy absorbed by the specimens. The machine was equipped with various sensor systems to measure the velocity of the impactor just before it contacts the specimen and the amount of contact force, and with a data acquisition … Show more

“…Although Izod and Charpy are the best known impact testing methods, they have significant drawbacks, such as the need for a notch in the specimen and limitations on the amount of load applied. For impact testing, another approach, drop weight impact testing (DWIT) [ 42 ], can be used. The energy absorption capacity of materials is measured by dropping a weight onto the specimen.…”

“…Pengujian impak merupakan suatu upaya untuk mensimulasikan kondisi operasi material yang sering ditemui dalam perlengkapan transportasi atau konstruksi dimana beban tidak selamanya terjadi secara perlahanlahan melainkan datang secara tiba-tiba [1,2]. Untuk menampung dinamika ini perlu pengujian dalam skala besar, baik jumlah maupun dimensi.…”

“…For high strain rate testing >10 3 s −1 , the split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) method [21,22] is often used. In the last decade, many proven experimental techniques have been developed for high strain rate testing, e.g., compression loading, drop weight [23], SHPB [24], and gas guns [25] are regularly used. For tensile loading, the split Hopkinson tension bar (SHTB) [26][27][28], flyer plate impact test [29], and the expansion ring [30] are used.…”
