Designing Circular Waste Management Strategies: The Case of Organic Waste in Amsterdam

Abstract: Urban waste management is one of the most complex and urgent challenges that the society faces. In this paper, an innovative research methodology is proposed, introducing a systemic approach to circular waste management strategy‐making. Urban waste management is a complex system that needs to be tackled in a holistic, yet context‐specific manner. To produce truly integrative outcomes, this paper provides insight into the system as a whole, its components and the relationships between them, using specific tools… Show more

“…According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), one‐third of all food resources worldwide were wasted in 2011 [54,55] . A recent study in our group for the city of Amsterdam shows how the major source of organic waste is households, even more than food industries, services, and production combined [56] . Even facing this dramatic datum, food waste continues, particularly in developed countries.…”

“…[54,55] A recent study in our group for the city of Amsterdam shows how the major source of organic waste is households, even more than food industries, services, and production combined. [56] Even facing this dramatic datum, food waste continues, particularly in developed countries. In fact, EU citizens produce approximately 70 kg of waste per capita [36] (albeit that the leading waste management system in the EU is energy recovery from waste [57][58][59][60] ).…”

“…Khan and Bajracharya [11] write that the geographic boundaries of councils can "become barriers to tackling wider issues", and councils who do not take a holistic approach risk creating gaps in coverage, inefficient management, public discontent and the exacerbation of environmental issues. When policymakers take a broader view, they can see how a system is contextually embedded, leading to more effective strategy design and improvements in sectors such as waste management [12].…”

“…These aggregated flows are visualized in a 2.5D Sankey diagram overlaid on a landscape sheet. A study by Viva et al (2020) performed a Material Flow Analysis (MFA) for organic waste in the city of Amsterdam and delivered classic Sankey diagrams for these flows (see Fig. 11.1c).…”
