Designing for inquiry‐based learning with the Learning Activity Management System

Abstract: This paper explores the relationship between practitioners' pedagogical purposes, values and practices in designing for inquiry-based learning in higher education, and the affordances of the Learning Activity Management System (LAMS) as a tool for creating learning designs in this context. Using a qualitative research methodology, variation was identified in participants' conceptions of inquiry-based learning pedagogy and in their approaches to inquiry-based learning design. LAMS was found to offer design affo… Show more

“…Some studies link between the two by trying to assess the extent to which experienced and/or successful teachers make use of instructional design methods (e.g., Moallem 1998;Young et al 1998). Studies of how teachers use learning designs, design tools, design principles and design patterns are still rather rare (Uduma and Morrison 2007;Bennett et al 2008Bennett et al , 2009Levy, Aiyegbayot, and Little 2009;Masterman, Jameson, and Walker 2009). Kerr's (1983) pioneering study of relatively inexperienced instructional designers highlighted some important features of their design thinking.…”

“…The process was a longitudinal one which, for us, strongly illustrates that narrative is conducive to visual outcomes (products) (Levy et al, 2009). It also reflects the importance of Conole's (2013) breakdown of the design process into mediating artefacts.…”

“…Affordance frameworks (Gibson, 1979) have seen substantial use in a number of creative endeavors, including the development of virtual environments (Dickey, 2003(Dickey, , 2005Ho, Nelson, & Müeller-Wittig, 2011), electronic and computer-mediated interfaces (Gu, 2014;Levy, Aiyegbayo, & Little, 2009;Louw & Crowley, 2013;Sommerauer & Müller, 2014), and human interaction in general (Erickson, 2010;Fayard & Weeks, 2007). However, it is Norman's (1988) design affordance terminology that has been most widely used in studies of informal learning environments (Achiam et al, 2014;Allen, 2005;Eberbach & Crowley, 2005;Monti & Keene, 2013;Mortensen et al, 2014;Reich & Parkes, 2005;Rowe, 2002).…”
