Designing Multiple Short-Turn Routes to Mitigate the Crowding on a Bus Network

Abstract: On a transit route, initiating a trip beyond a transit route’s departure terminus and terminating the trip before its arrival is called “short-turn.” This study develops a method to design short-turn services to alleviate crowding on a transit network consisting of multiple overlapping routes. The proposed method consists of two processes: (i) optimizing routes, turn-back points, and fleet sizes of short-turn services by a genetic algorithm to minimize the sum of waiting, in-vehicle, operation, and social cost… Show more

“…Even before the emergence of the concept of physical distancing, transportation researchers assessed the level of service provided by public transportation using the crowding metric, which bears a close relation to the idea of physical distancing (14)(15)(16)(17). Crowding is an essential factor in providing a high level of service quality for passengers, and a substantial body of research has been dedicated to estimating crowding and proposing methodologies to mitigate overcrowding (18)(19)(20).…”

“…Ulusoy and Chien [ 12 ] introduced express service into the FS and short-turn services, using a logit-based model to estimate ridership with these services. Moon et al [ 13 ] investigated the implementation of short-turn services on multiple crowding routes in a transit network and decided the routes, turn-back points, and fleet sizes of short-turn services by minimizing the total system cost.…”
