Designing Rehabilitation Programs for Neglect: Could 2 Be More Than 1+1?

Abstract: Unilateral neglect is a multimodal neuropsychological disorder which has puzzled scientists for a long time. Many interventions have been developed, but only a handful have proved to be effective. This review examines whether applying different therapeutic techniques in combination will increase therapeutic benefits. Studies were reviewed where therapies are applied sequentially or in combination with other techniques. The results indicate that combining different interventions leads to increased general impro… Show more

“…Disorders of attention such as attention-deficit or attentiondeficit hyperactivity disorder can severely affect normal functioning (Barkley, 2006), as can attentional disorders due to neurological damage, such as hemispatial neglect (Heilman, Watson, & Valenstein, 2003;Saevarsson, Halsband, & Kristjánsson, 2011) or Balints syndrome (Rafal, 2001). Abnormal attentional biases have been found to play a role in anxiety disorders (see, e.g., Bar-Haim, 2010, for a review), and effects such as inattentional blindness (Most, Scholl, Clifford, & Simons, 2005;Simons, 2000), change blindness (Rensink, O'Regan, & Clark, 1997;Simons & Rensink, 2005), and the attentional blink (Kristjánsson & Nakayama, 2002;Raymond, Shapiro, & Arnell, 1992) highlight the important role that attention plays in normal vision.…”

“…Likewise, Saevarsson et al (2011) argue that combining various therapeutic techniques might be worthwhile, because of the heterogeneity of the neglect syndrome. A good mixture of treatment ingredients would be largely facilitated by more fundamental knowledge about the mechanisms of visuospatial neglect and research into these mechanisms should continue with the same intensity in the future.…”

“…If this is the case, then additive effects of LAT, PA, and VST should be observed. The additive effects of treatments can be addressed in future studies in which the combined use of the three treatments should be tested (e.g., LAT or PA vs. LAT plus PA; for reviews on additive effects of LN treatments, see Singh-Curry and Husain, 2008; Saevarsson et al, 2011). For instance, by combining neck vibration and PA, Saevarsson et al (2010) have reported additive therapeutic effects on LN signs.…”
