Desmoplastic fibroma of the jaw bones: A series of twenty-two cases

Abstract: Highlights In desmoid-type soft tissue fibromatosis we could see the beta-catenin in the nuclei of neoplastic cells as a diagnostic feature. Beta-catenin in the nuclei of neoplastic cells could not be detected in the present DF series. Most of the DF cases expressed only cytoplasmic beta-catenin immunostainings. Immunohistochemical staining difference of jaw bone desmoplastic fibromas from other soft tissue and bone lesions may be relate… Show more

“…Indeed, these benign tumors mainly affect the mandible, femur, humerus, and pelvic bones. 27,28 To our knowledge, this is the second case of a desmoplastic fibroid tumor of the sacrum. 29 Hence, there is little experience with the surgical treatment and adjuvant therapy for this kind of sacral tumor.…”

“…Immunohistochemical staining difference of jaw bone DF from other soft tissue and bone lesions may be related to the origination of jaw bone from the neural crest. (10) Proliferation markers like Ki-67 can be used as a surrogate marker for evaluating the tumor's aggressiveness. A low rate of predicted cell turnover in DF has been reported.…”

“…12 Clinically, these tumors are often located in the posterior side of the mandible with slow growth and absence of pain. 13 Meanwhile, clinical and radiographic features often show clear signs of an existing desmoplastic fibroma, however, a histopathological examination is required to determine a definite diagnosis. 12,13 This study describes a rare case report of cemento ossifying fibroma that had been previously diagnosed as desmoplastic fibroma with a tumor mass located in the anterior of the maxilla which is a relatively rare location.…”
