Desulfurization of Fuel by Extraction and Catalytic Oxidation Using a Vanadium Substituted Dawson-Type Emulsion Catalyst

Abstract: A vanadium-substituted Dawson-type polyoxometalate [cetronium] 11 P 2 W 13 V 5 O 62 was fabricated to use in the extractive−catalytic oxidative desulfurization (ECODS) of fuels using hydrogen peroxide and ionic liquids (ILs), ethylene glycol, and a deep eutectic solvent. Taguchi robust was utilized to investigate the effects of operation parameters including H 2 O 2 dosage, type of solvent, solvent-to-oil volume ratio, temperature, and contact time. The results demonstrated that the highest level of desulfuri… Show more

“…In view of the strict legislation about fuel quality in many countries, substantial research efforts have been focused on reducing the sulfur concentration of refined petroleum products. To obtain low‐sulfur fuels, hydrodesulfurization (HDS) as the traditional process is often used in the petroleum industry . This technology has been proven to be a robust method in reducing thiol, sulfur mercaptan, sulfide, disulfide, thiophene and derivatives .…”

“…Compared to BDS and ADS, EDS could be operated at mild conditions with the use of suitable extractant to desulfurize fuel oil. On the other hand, integrating ODS in EDS system (EODS) will promote the oxidation of sulfur into sulfone components, which can be easily extracted into the solvent phase [15][16][17][18]. Selection of extractant is nonetheless challenging since some of the conventional solvents are highly flammable and volatile [19][20][21].…”

“…Among these new processes, ODS is considered to be one of the promising new methods and is currently receiving growing attention. The greatest advantage of ODS compared with the conventional HDS process is that it can be carried out in the liquid phase, under very mild conditions, and does not need expensive hydrogen [1,10].…”
