Detailed energy dependence of the elastic and inelastic12C +12C scattering between 5 and 10 MeV/nucleon

Abstract: Excitation functions for 12C-~ i2C elastic and inelastic scattering to 2 + level have been measured over the energy range 30-60 MeV (cm) by 250 keV steps using the kinematical coincidence method. The intermediate structure resonances disappear above Eem = 35 MeV while the broad and irregular structure becomes a general feature of the interaction at higher energies.

“…These events were excluded by using two methods, first Dalitz plots (which display how the decay energy is divided between the various decay channels) considering the kinematics of the breakup of the resonant nucleus and second considering the kinematics of the formation of the resonant nucleus. The Dalitz plots were used to select the states in 24 Mg and the consideration of the two body kinematics of the scattering of 16 O * allowed a high-energy cutoff in the excitation of 24 Mg to be made, where the contamination from events from the decay of 16 …”

“…The relative energy is equivalent to the excitation of the 16 O nucleus plus the Q value of the breakup of 16 O into 12 C+␣. The relative energy of the first 12 C and the ␣ particle was plotted against the relative energy of the second 12 C and the ␣ particle.…”

“…These resonances have been interpreted for 12 C + 12 C [2], the most favorable case for the observation of quasimolecular resonances [1][2][3][4][5], in terms of nuclear molecules. The question of whether the well-known 12 C + 12 C quasimolecular resonances represent true cluster states in the 24 Mg compound system or whether they simply reflect scattering states in the ion-ion potential is still unresolved [1,[6][7][8].…”
