Detecting early-stage Parkinson’s disease from gait data

Parvathy Nair,
Maryam Shojaei Baghini,
Gita Pendharkar
et al.

Abstract: Parkinson’s disease is a chronic and progressive neurodegenerative disorder with an estimated 10 million people worldwide living with PD. Since early signs are benign, many patients go undiagnosed until the symptoms get severe and the treatment becomes more difficult. The symptoms start intermittently and gradually become continuous as the disease progresses. In order to detect and classify these minute differences between gaits in early PD patients, we propose to use dynamic time warping (DTW). For a given se… Show more

“…Besides that, trustable digital gait features require clear evidence that these sensor measurements correlate signi cantly with established clinical outcomes such as MDS-Uni ed Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale (MDS-UPDRS) [7]. Although digital gait features have been explored in several studies in PD research, most studies solely focus on distinguishing PD patients from healthy controls in cross-sectional manner [5,[8][9][10][11][12][13]. Some studies also classify patients into multiple disease stages [14][15][16][17], but studies rarely describe the associations between PD progression and gait directly [4][5][6].…”
