Detection and Phylogenetic Analysis of Porcine Deltacoronavirus in Korean Swine Farms, 2015

Abstract: This study applied molecular-based method to investigate the presence of porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV) in 59 commercial pig farms in South Korea. The results of RT-PCR screening on a relatively large collection of faeces samples (n = 681) from January 2013 to March 2015 did not reveal the presence of PDCoV until the end of 2014. However, on March 2015, PDCoV-positive samples (SL2, SL5) were detected from SL swine farm in Gyeongbuk province. The phylogenetic trees based on the complete spike- and nucleocapsi… Show more

“…Many types of viruses cause diarrhoea in animals, including TGEV (Zhang, Zhu, Zhu, Chen et al., ), swine enteric coronaviruses (SeCoVs) (Belsham et al., ), PEDV (Lohse et al., ; Tian et al., ; Zhang, Tian et al., ), porcine deltacoronavirus (Lee et al., ; Mai et al., ; Saeng‐Chuto et al., ) and rotaviruses (Kim et al., ). Rotaviruses cause acute dehydrating diarrhoea in various hosts, including children and young animals (Jiang, Liu, & Tan, ).…”

“…After the first report of PDCoV infection (Woo et al., ), its prevalence was detected in pigs in several states of the United States, South Korea, mainland China, Southern China and Thailand with majority of piglets having clinical diarrhoeal disease (Dong et al., ; Lee et al., ; Mai et al., ; Saeng‐Chuto et al., ; Wang et al., ). The prevalence of PDCoV in certain regions of the world is intriguing with regard to its epidemiology, evolution and pathogenicity.…”

“…Porcine deltacoronavirus was first identified in swine specimens collected in 2009 in Hong Kong (Woo et al., ). It was identified later in several states of USA (Li et al., ; Marthaler, Jiang, Collins, & Rossow, ; Wang, Byrum, & Zhang, ) and has now spread to South Korea, mainland China, Thailand and Laos (Lee & Lee, ; Lee et al., ; Lorsirigool et al., ; Madapong et al., ; Song et al., ). The emergence of PDCoV was most often associated with clinical infection symptoms including diarrhoea, vomiting and dehydration in pigs, especially in sucking and nursing piglets (Janetanakit et al., ; Ma et al., ; Marthaler, Raymond et al ; Song et al., ).…”
