Detection and quantitative analysis of organochlorine compounds (PCBs and DDTs) in deep sea fish liver from Mediterranean Sea

Abstract: The high ratios SigmaPCBs/SigmaDDTs indicated predominantly industrial versus agrarian activities in the area. Dioxins toxic equivalent (TEQ) concentrations (8.1-18.7 pg TEQ per gram wet weight) reached those encountered in marine organisms at higher levels in the trophic chain, revealing the onerous status of contamination by PCBs in Mediterranean deep sea biota.

“…DL-and NDLPCBs have been detected in blood and tissues of humans as well as in mammals and in fishes, with a higher frequency (Ferrante et al, 2010). NDL-compounds have been found at concentration levels much higher than the DL-PCBs (Storelli and Perrone, 2010), although carcinogenicity of NDL-PCBs has not been shown (Knerr and Schrenk, 2006). Moreover, mixtures of PCBs are generally evaluated on the basis of a chemical analysis of seven PCBs (IUPAC nos.…”

“…For example, Storelli et al [33] reported medians of 13, 25, and 115 ng/g lw for wild-caught red shrimp (Aristeus antennatus), pink shrimp (Parapenaeus longirostris), and golden shrimp (Plesioniea martia), respectively, from the same region in the southern Adriatic Sea. These findings may also reflect differences in habitation depth, because in general, PCB loadings of marine organisms have been shown to increase with greater depth [34][35][36]. In the present study, the species of shrimp for each sample could not be identified, presenting a potential source of bias.…”

“…2 Comparison of TEQ concentrations in electric ray and marbled electric ray liver with those in liver of other marine organisms. Data were cited from (1) this study; (2, 3) Storelli et al 2008Storelli et al , 2009 (4) Storelli and Perrone 2010;(5, 6) Serrano et al 1997(5, 6) Serrano et al , 2000. Asterisk picograms per gram wet weight were generally lower than those in other elasmobranch fishes from the Mediterranean (Storelli and Marcotrigiano 2001;Storelli et al 2005Storelli et al , 2006 and non-Mediterranean regions (Lee et al 1997;Berg et al 1997;Schlenk et al 2005), while the levels of PCBs were generally comparable with those reported in previous investigations for other elasmobranch species from Mediterranean waters (Storelli et al 2004b) and various marine regions in the world (Lee et al 1997;Berg et al 1997;Serrano et al 1997Serrano et al , 2000Gelsleichter et al 2008).…”
