“…Higher thiadiamondoids, including 2−6 cages, were discovered in a gas condensate produced from a very deep petroleum reservoir in the northern Gulf of Mexico, USA. 118 Thiadiamondoids with multiple lattice cages were also detected in condensates from the Tarim Basin in China 73,74,77 Thiadiamondoids occur in high-maturity crude oils, especially crude oil with the TSR process, and are orders of magnitude more abundant in TSR-altered oil than in unaltered oil. 64 These compounds were considered to be a molecular proxy for the occurrence and extent of TSR, 64,117−121 although a sulfur isotope analysis indicated that the formation of these compounds is not exclusive to TSR reactions and that they can also form through a reaction with reduced sulfur species apart from sulfate reduction.…”

“…Thiols are important types of OSCs in petroleum, whose formation and transformation are the most important parts in the natural sulfur cycle. Thiols may be the intermediate products at the earliest stages of diagenesis, by which abundant organic carbon was allowed to be preserved in the rock record . Thiols in crude oil have a close and complex relationship with the sulfate thermal reduction (TSR) process that occurred in many high temperature reservoirs. TSR reduces sulfates to sulfides and oxidizes hydrocarbons to carbon dioxide, whose reaction network seems complex and pathways and mechanism have not been completely revealed . Thiols are considered as the intermediate products of the TSR process, and simulation experiments have proved that thiols can play an autocatalytic role and accelerate related reactions .…”
