Detection of a Bovine Group C Rotavirus from Adult Cows with Diarrhea and Reduced Milk Production

Abstract: ABSTRACT. Only two strains (Shintoku and porcine-like WD534tc) of group C rotavirus (GCR) from cattle have been reported to date. A GCR designated the Yamagata strain was the only pathogen detected in an outbreak of adult cow diarrhea accompanied by a decrease in milk production. The nucleotide sequences of the VP6 and VP7 genes from strain Yamagata were determined. Comparative sequence analysis showed that the sequence identities between strains Yamagata and Shintoku were markedly high in both VP6 gene (98.1%… Show more

“…After its discovery in swine population (Saif et al 1980), RVC has been detected in human, ferret, mink, cattle and dog from many countries (Torres-Medina 1987;Tsunemitsu et al 1991;Saif and Jiang 1994;Otto et al 1999;Mawatari et al 2004;Wise et al 2009;Marton et al 2015). It is now a well-established etiological agent of diarrheal outbreaks for neonatal and adult gastroenteritis (Araujo et al 2011;Kumazaki and Usuku 2014).…”

“…The porcine GCRVs exhibit a variety of VP7 genotypes (G1, G3, G5, and G6), while the bovine strains identified to date are G2 and the human strains are G4 (22,28,29,33,34,47,48).…”

“…Group A rotavirus has been tentatively proposed as playing a major role on the etiology WD (Sato et al 1997), but reports on adult bovine symptomatically infected by rotaviruses are scarce. Groups B and C rotaviruses have also been detected in fecal specimens of cows with WD, but at low frequencies (Parwani et al 1996, Chang et al 1997, Mawatari et al 2004.…”
