Detection of a novel equine-like G3 rotavirus associated with acute gastroenteritis in Brazil

Abstract: Genotype G3P[8] of rotavirus A (RVA) is detected worldwide, usually associated with Wa-like constellation and exhibiting a long RNA migration pattern. More recently, a novel inter-genogroup, G3P[8] reassortant variant with a short electropherotype, has emerged in Asia, Oceania and Europe, denoting an overall potential of unusual rotavirus strains. During a RVA surveillance in Brazil, G3P[8] strains were found displaying a short electropherotype pattern, which had not been detected before in this region. This s… Show more

“…In the survey on the G/P type distributions in Thailand between 2000 and 2016, 4,6,7,37,43 various G/P type combinations of RVAs were observed: common G1P [8], G2P [4], G3P [8], and G9P [8], and uncommon G2P [8], G3P [3], G3P [9], G3P [10], G3P [19], G12P [6], and G12P [8] have been reported. G1P [8] was the most predominant RVA strain detected in Thailand, with an average frequency of detection of 49%, followed by G9P [8], G2P [4], and G3P [8], 24%, 14%, and 11%, respectively.…”

“…G3P[8] strains with a short RNA profile are described as DS‐1‐like (equine‐like) G3P[8] strains since their VP7 gene sequences are highly related to those of RVAs detected in horses . Recently, DS‐1‐like G1P[8] strains and equine‐like G3P[8] strains have spread worldwide …”
