Detection of Atomic Scale Changes in the Free Volume Void Size of Three-Dimensional Colorectal Cancer Cell Culture Using Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy

Abstract: Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) provides a direct measurement of the free volume void sizes in polymers and biological systems. This free volume is critical in explaining and understanding physical and mechanical properties of polymers. Moreover, PALS has been recently proposed as a potential tool in detecting cancer at early stages, probing the differences in the subnanometer scale free volume voids between cancerous/healthy skin samples of the same patient. Despite several investigations o… Show more

“…simultaneous imaging of the density distribution of annihilation points as well as positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy [8,36]. The positronium imaging technique has successfully distinguished cancer from healthy tissue by in vitro probing of human tissues or in the in vitro organoid (3D cell culture) systems [37]. Study of positronium decay can provide new data in medical diagnosis as the mean lifetime of positronium depends on the size of free volume between atoms, whereas its formation probability depends on the concentration of voids [38].…”
