Detection of colistin resistance mcr-1 gene in Salmonella enterica serovar Rissen isolated from mussels, Spain, 2012 to 2016

Abstract: Nineteen Salmonella strains were isolated from 5,907 randomly selected mussel samples during a monitoring programme for the presence of Salmonella in shellfish in Galicia, north-west Spain (2012–16). Serovars, sequence type and antimicrobial resistance genes were determined through genome sequencing. Presence of the mcr-1 gene in one strain belonging to serovar Rissen and ST-469 was identified. The mcr-1 gene had not been isolated previously in environmental Salmonella isolated from mussels in Spain.

“…Salmonella Agona ST13 was the most prevalent serovar isolated from chicken meat in Sri Lanka [ 33 ], and a Salmonella Agona strain isolated from chicken meat in China possessed a T57S substitution in ParC and carried qnrS [ 34 ]. Salmonella Rissen ST469 was isolated from ready-to-eat mussels in Spain and pork products in Portugal [ 35 , 36 ]. Moreover, ST469 was the third most predominant ST isolated from pork samples in China and nearly one-third of the ST469 isolates were resistant to ciprofloxacin [ 37 ].…”

“…In Vietnam, mcr-1 was detected in one extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing E. coli isolated from striped catfish grown in ponds [ 25 , 26 ]. A recent study from Spain reported mcr-1 in Salmonella enterica serovar Rissen isolated from mussels [ 27 ]. However, beyond these few studies on farmed fish in China and Vietnam and on mussels in Spain [ 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 ], data on the occurrence of mcr in aquaculture have been limited.…”

However, beyond these few studies on farmed fish in China and Vietnam and on mussels in Spain [ 23 , 24 , 25 , 26 , 27 ], data on the occurrence of mcr in aquaculture have been limited. Therefore, it is important to investigate colistin resistance and mcr in aquaculture globally, especially in developing countries with limited infrastructure and documented challenges in pollution.…”

“…Strains of Salmonella are important pathogens of concern in food safety, as they are frequently transmitted between agricultural animals, food, and humans ( Foley and Lynne, 2008 ); the pathogens often cause gastroenteritis, in some cases severe, and are responsible for >600,000 deaths annually ( Lokken et al, 2016 ). Increasing antimicrobial resistance in Salmonella species is considered an important public health concern of the 21st century ( Lozano-Leon et al, 2019 ). Salmonella strains that acquire multidrug resistance genes would be difficult to treat and would result in an even higher number of cases with severe morbidity and high frequency of mortality.…”
