Detection of Contrabands in Cargo Containers Using a High-Speed Gas Chromatograph with Surface Acoustic Wave Sensor

Abstract: A portable chemical profiling system for cargo containers using a single, uncoated, high Q surface acoustic wave sensor, along with a high-speed chromatograph and column, a programmable gate array microprocessor, and a vapor preconcentrator, is described. This unit provides a recognizable visual vectorial image in N-dimensional space (where N equals the number of sensors) of specific vapor mixtures (fragrances) containing possibly hundreds of different chemical species in 20 s or near real time with picogram s… Show more

“…Microsensors are often used in this kind of device due to their low carrier gas consumption, small size, low power consumption for operation, and quite good sensitivity compared to standard sensors. Examples of microsensors include the solid-state thermal conductivity detector (TCD or SSD) [102][103][104], photoionisation detector (PID), [105,106], surface acoustic wave (SAW) detector [107][108][109], and the flame ionisation detector (FID) [99,[110][111][112].…”

“…Depending on physical and chemical properties, such as the boiling point, the polarity, H-bonding, and polarizability, the affinity of each single substance for the stationary phase is different. The partition behavior determines the retention time of the components and, consequently, the order of elution [57].…”

“…As microcomponents for portable GCs, a silicon microelectromechanical-system (MEMS) column 2,3) and micropump 4) were studied, and their performances were demonstrated by their combination with a conventional desktop GC. Portable GCs were developed using a metal oxide semiconductor sensor, 5) SAW sensor 6) and chemiresistor sensor 7) as detectors. However, they needed temperature programming using a heater because of the analysis of multiple gases with a single column, making them unsuitable for use as portable GCs in terms of power consumption.…”
