Characterizing surface deformation throughout a full earthquake cycle is a challenge due to the lack of high-resolution geodetic observations of duration comparable to that of characteristic earthquake recurrence intervals (250-10,000 years). Here we approach this problem by comparing long-term geologic slip rates with geodetically derived fault slip rates by sampling only a short fraction (0.001%-0.1%) of a complete earthquake cycle along 15 continental strike-slip faults. Geodetic observations provide snapshots of surface deformation from different times through the earthquake cycle. The timing of the last earthquake on many of these faults is poorly known, and may vary greatly from fault to fault. Assuming that the underlying mechanics of the seismic cycle are similar for all faults, geodetic observations from different faults may be interpreted as samples over a significantly larger fraction of the earthquake cycle than could be obtained from the geodetic record along any one fault alone. As an ensemble, we find that geologically and geodetically inferred slip rates agree well with a linear relation of 0:94 0:09. To simultaneously explain both the ensemble agreement between geologic and geodetic slip-rate estimates with observations of rapid postseismic deformation, we consider the predictions from simple two-layer earthquake-cycle models with both Maxwell and Burgers viscoelastic rheologies. We find that a two-layer Burgers model, with two relaxation timescales, is consistent with observations of deformation throughout the earthquake cycle, whereas the widely used two-layer Maxwell model with a single relaxation timescale, is not, suggesting that the earthquake cycle is effectively characterized by a largely stressrecoverable rapid postseismic stage and a much more slowly varying interseismic stage.

The central Philippine Fault Zone is found to be the locus of great earthquakes, a transition zone with slow slip and creep activity. This is based on the analysis and correlation of seismic historic data and detailed documentation of recent seismic events in the region. Based on this study the Guinyangan fault is defined to be the northern locked portion with recurrence interval of as short as 65 years. The Masbate fault is the central part with large and medium earthquakes accompanied by unusually large ground rupture. The north Central Leyte fault and the south Central Leyte fault, on the other hand, are characterized by aseismic creep and medium-sized events, usually with clusters of foreshocks, respectively. Unusual seismic activity both on the Masbate fault and Central Leyte fault somehow correlates well with the behavior of known slow events and creep activity. Further investigation of this region could lead to deeper understanding of impending major earthquakes, especially along the Guinyangan fault, which usually produces larger damaging events, and for further understanding of the impact of slow events and creep on the adjoining active structures.

Improving the velocity field in South and South-East Asia: The third round of GEODYSSEA

In the framework of the GEODYnamics of South and South-East Asia (GEODYSSEA) project a network of 42 stations was observed by GPS during two field campaigns in 1994 and 1996. BKG and GFZ realized a third observation of the complete network in 1998. The data was analyzed independently by two analysis centers and a precision of the coordinate solutions was found to be 4-7 mm for the horizontal, and 10 mm for the vertical component. Subsequently, these campaign solutions were merged into one unique solution, which was accurately mapped into the International Terrestrial Reference Frame of 1997 (ITRF97). The global accuracy of this solution with respect to ITRF97 is of the order of 10 mm, while the resolution of the relative horizontal velocities is estimated to be at the level of 2-3 mm/yr. Comparison of the new solution with the previously published GEODYSSEA solution indicates, that improved results for the motion of Sundaland, South China and the overall deformation in the area could be found. Improvements are due to the increased time span and due to a better connection to and the advances in the ITRF reference frame. The new set of coordinates and velocities is used as the basis for scientific interpretations, which have been and will be published in separate papers.
