Detection of Cyprinid Herpesvirus 1 DNA in cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma of koi carp (Cyprinus carpio)

Abstract: Background -Cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) is an uncommon disease affecting koi carp (Cyprinus carpio). Cutaneous papilloma (carp pox) is a benign epidermal proliferation reported in koi and has been shown to be caused by Cyprinid Herpesvirus 1 (CyHV1).Hypothesis/Objectives -Histological, ultrastructural and molecular investigations were carried out aiming to investigate the aetiology of cSCC within archived tissue samples.Animals -Surgical samples of masses located on the integument, fins and lips o… Show more

“…Although the virological agent of the disease in Bream has not yet been identified, an association between these tumors and the presence of viruses has been demonstrated in cyprinids (Sirri et al. ). This pathology could be related to adverse and polluted environmental conditions and algal oncogenic toxins (Chukalova et al.…”

“…CyHV-1 is a well-known viral pathogen of common carp causing benign epidermal proliferations (Sano et al, 1985), and recently it has also been detected in cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma of koi carp (Sirri et al, 2018). According to current knowledge, herpesviruses have high host specificity (Davison, 2002).…”

“…Five to ten mg of sliced FFPE tissue was placed in 1 mL of xylene (J.T. Baker, Phillipsburg, NJ, USA), and a pre-extraction step to remove paraffin from the sample was applied, as previously described [ 18 ]. Samples were deparaffinized in xylene for 5 min; following centrifugation, samples were washed twice in 100% ethanol.…”
