Detection of Epstein-Barr virus in synovial fluid of rheumatoid arthritis patients

Abstract: IntroductionRheumatoid arthritis (RA) is one of the most common chronic inflammatory disorders. Genes and environmental factors contribute to RA. Epstein–Barr Virus (EBV) has been considered as one the RA pathogeneses. The aim of this study was to detect of the EBV genome in patients with RA.MethodsIn this cross-sectional study, 50 samples of synovial fluid were obtained from patients with RA from 2010–2012. Using a standard of the EBV genome and EBNA-1-specific primers, the method of PCR was set up. Then, all… Show more

“…EBV is a DNA virus from the Herpesviridae family, involved in Hodgkin's lymphoma, Burkitt's lymphoma (as B‐cell cancres), nasopharyngeal carcinoma, gastric cancer (as epithelial malignancies), and autoimmune diseases . In these tumors, EBV establishes latent infections, expressing only a subset of viral genes, allowing the virus to affect cellular signaling contributing to oncogenesis .…”

“…[ 35 ] Moreover, virus such as rubella virus and Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) is the initiator of RA. [ 36 ] Furthermore, the alteration in the composition and function of intestinal microbiome has been associated with rheumatoid arthritis, that is patients having decreased gut microbiome diversity as compared to the healthy individuals. [ 37 ] Smoking is also one of the causative factors of rheumatoid arthritis as it contributes to the development of RF factor which is up to three times more common in smokers than non‐smokers.…”

“…EBV has been implicated in the pathogenic manifestation of RA. Patients with this disorder demonstrate elevated EBV reactive antibody titers and impaired lymphocyte responses to EBV, and EBV has been identified in the synovial fluid of patients with RA, indirectly implicating EBV in RA pathogenesis 6365 . Modeling this pathological phenotype, humanized NOG mice infected with EBV develop an erosive arthritis.…”
