Detection of false AIS messages for the improvement of maritime situational awareness

Abstract: The Automatic Identification System (AIS) was initially designed for safety and security of navigation purposes. However it was progressively also used for other objectives, such as surveillance, and thus led to the discovery of behaviors such as the falsification of the AIS messages by people that have been carrying out illegal activities and will to keep their activities up in an hidden way. In addition, the messages contain erroneous data and undergo spoofing attacks. The paper introduces the quality dimens… Show more

“…Previous research on data quality in the maritime domain mainly concerned the quality of AIS data (such as completeness of AIS messages, their accuracy, integrity, etc.) (MMO 2013;Harati-Mokhtari et al 2007;Iphar et al 2015). However, the methodologies and quality attributes proposed there do not fit well with the assessment of other maritime-related sources of data, especially data published on the Internet.…”

“…Quantitative AIS performance can be measured by comparing the number of messages received by the space-based AIS system to another AIS system such as terrestrial-based AIS [14]. The other one, qualitative AIS performance, can be assessed by comparing the portion of valid messages to all received messages containing erroneous data [15].…”
