Detection of human papillomavirus DNA in tumors from Rwandese breast cancer patients

Abstract: These findings provide evidence of high prevalence of high-risk HPV in Rwandese patients with breast cancer and suggest that high-risk HPV infections could be a risk factor associated with human breast cancer development.

“…In our study, the overall prevalence of high-risk HPV infection was 15%. Our results corroborate the majority of studies that investigate the presence of viral HPV-DNA in cases of breast cancer worldwide [12, 22, 23]. However the prevalence observed in our study was low compared to other studies conducted worldwide [22, 24, 25].…”

“…Our results corroborate the majority of studies that investigate the presence of viral HPV-DNA in cases of breast cancer worldwide [ 12, 22, 23 ]. However the prevalence observed in our study was low compared to other studies conducted worldwide [ 22, 24, 25 ]. However, the relative size of our sample could not allow us a good comparison of prevalence with the other studies and the descriptive character of our study rightly limits its scope.…”

“…These were the only two studies that reported this virus in Africa. Studies have also shown an association of the hepatitis C virus in Egypt ( 100 ) and Human papillomavirus (HPV) in Rwanda ( 101 ) to breast cancer progression. However, the most reported virus linked to breast cancer in Africa is the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), with studies published in Algeria ( 102 ), Eritrea ( 103 ), Egypt ( 104 ), and Sudan ( 105 ).…”

“…The proposal of alternative strategies for support technologies involving the reduction in the number of steps for DNA extraction and amplification are very useful in rapid and low cost diseases diagnosis approach . These approaches can be explored in the miniaturization of diagnostic sets to permit the development of assays in the absence of laboratory conditions .…”
