Detection of Pasteurella muftocida in pigs with porcine dermatitis and nephropathy syndrome

Abstract: Comprehensive bacterial cultures were made on samples from 20 pigs that had died of porcine dermatitis and nephropathy syndrome after a short clinical illness. Eleven species of porcine bacterial pathogens and a range of commensal organisms were isolated. Pasteurella multocida was isolated from 16 of the 20 cases but the other pathogens occurred much less commonly. P. multocida was isolated from between one and five sites per case and from the tonsils, retropharyngeal lymph node or lungs in 14 of the 16 cases.… Show more

“…Although the etiology of PDNS is unknown, PCV2 nucleic acid is commonly detected in affected pigs by qPCR, while PCV2 antigen is inconsistently detected (26,42). This has led to speculation about the role of PCV2 in PDNS (43,44). Here, we identified a highly divergent new species of porcine circovirus, designated PCV3, from mummified fetuses aborted from sows with PDNS-like lesions and from sows that died acutely with clinical signs consistent with PDNS.…”

“…Of the pathogenic bacteria occurring in pigs, previous studies have suggested the aetiological involvement of Streptococcus species, Salmonella typhimurium and Pasteurella multocida (Sierra et al, 1997;Thibault et al, 1998;Thomson et al, 2001). Porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) virus (Thibault et al, 1998) and circoviruses (Segalés et al, 1996;Segalés and Domingo, 2000;Rosell et al, 1999;Rosell et al, 2000) have been detected in the deposited immune complexes separately and also in the same cases simultaneously (Choi and Chae, 2001).…”

“…were found in the present study and can induce vascular lesions in swine. 13,24 These bacteria could have been responsible for vascular lesions in 16 of 36 cases with severe PCV2 infection (44%), in 10 of 13 cases with mild PCV2 infection (77%), and in 9 of 24 cases without PCV2 infection (38%). Vascular lesions and associated tissue changes were positively associated with only the presence of P. multocida and Streptococcus spp.…”
