Detection of lower limb deep vein thrombosis: Comparison between radionuclide venography and venous ultrasonography

Abstract: Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a serious medical condition that needs prompt diagnosis and treatment. The invasive gold standard contrast venography has largely been replaced by venous ultrasonography which is currently the imaging modality of choice for DVT diagnosis. Radionuclide venography (RNV) is an alternative test for DVT, but a few studies have directly compared RNV with venous ultrasonography. This study aims to determine the agreement between RNV and venous ultrasonography for diagnosis of DVT and to … Show more

“…Our contradictory findings are likely a result of compilation of ultrasonography results of varying unreported methodologies. It is well documented that the sensitivity and specificity for ultrasonography is dependent on patient type, user and area scanned with agreement for venography and ultrasonography ranging from 92.9% (proximal vessels) to 60% (distal vessels) [ 31 ]. As such, we advise that datasets combining ultrasonography data be interpreted with caution.…”

“…-Venography: This is an invasive procedure where contrast dye is injected into the veins, allowing direct visualization of perfusion and any evidence blockages. 28 -Chest X-ray: Chest X-ray features of acute PE include an enlarged pulmonary artery (Fleischner's sign), regional oligemia (Westermark's sign), and Hampton's hump (wedge-shaped distal infarct). However, these indicators have high specificity but very low sensitivity.…”

“…The contrast dye mixes with the blood and flows proximally so that the complete deep venous system of the leg, comprising the external iliac along with common iliac veins, can be imaged 23 . It is considered as most accurate test for diagnosing blood clots but it is invasive in nature 24 . Thus, it has been replaced by venous ultrasonography, which is readily available, painless, and can be performed easily without any painful procedure 25,26 .…”
