Detection of Lymph Node Micrometastases in Colorectal Cancer

Abstract: Complementary medicine use is common in patients with IBD. Frequently cited reasons for the use of complementary therapies were safety of CAM; dissatisfaction with conventional therapies, including their side effects; and that CAM can be used in addition to conventional therapy.

“…Many patients or parents may be reluctant to tell their physician about CAM use, possibly thinking that it is not relevant [18,27,36] but this aspect was not assessed in the current study. Furthermore, patients tend to believe that CAM therapies are safer and less toxic than conventional medication, which is not always true.…”

“…3 It is difficult to prove that there is micrometastasis in the liver. In patients whose tumor cells are detected in circulating blood, metastasis in distant organs, including the liver, occurs at a high incidence, indicating that tumor cell detection in circulating blood can serve as an index of cancer recurrence.…”

“…Only few studies could show micrometastases detected by IHC in lymph nodes of UICC stage I and II patients to correlate with disease recurrence and survival (Noura et al, Lee et al, 2006;Messerini et al, 2006). These conflicting data may be due to the specificity and sensitivity of proteins used for detection as well as the variable thickness and number of tissue sections analysed (Nordgard et al, 2003). Therefore, we did not compare the results of rt-MSP with IHC studies.…”
