Detection of Massive Pulmonary Embolism by Transesophageal Echocardiography

Abstract: Transesophageal echocardiography is a new echocardio-graphic technique with indications that are still expanding and being redefined. Recently, the usefulness of transesophageal echocardiography in pulmonary embolism has been demonstrated in several case reports. In this article, we present 3 cases with pulmonary embolism diagnosed by transesophageal echocardiography and discuss its diagnostic value in this clinical setting.

“…The cryoprobes were only introduced 1 cm into the bone to avoid freezing the cortical substance. Thus, the necrosis zone (which roughly corresponds to the -10°C isotherm [24]) only comprised an area of 2.4 × 2.4 in the outer cortical substance. Control holes and access holes were drilled on the contralateral sides (left femur, head of the right tibia).…”

“…Auch auf eine transö sophageale Platzierung eines Ultraschallkopfes zur Detektion von Mikroembolien [18,27] wurde verzichtet, da bei den Versuchstieren zum einen eine stä ndige Absaugung von Verdauungssekret ü ber eine großlumigen, transö sophageal eingebrachten Schlauch nö tig war und somit keine zusätzliche Ultraschallsonde platzierbar gewesen wä re.…”

“…85 In some instances of large PE, direct visualization of thrombus in the main pulmonary artery may be seen by transesophageal echocardiography. [86][87][88] For patients in the medical ICU with hemodynamic instability of undetermined cause, echocardiography can be useful. Not only can right-ventricular function be assessed, but some assessment of left-ventricular function, valvular function, and pericardial disease can be completed at the bedside.…”
