Detection of neuromechanical acute fatigue-related responses during a duathlon simulation: Is tensiomyography sensitive enough?

Abstract: New technological advances are constantly being developed to assess fatigue and muscle damage in sports. Tensiomyography (TMG) has been used as an alternative method to indirectly assess these physiological responses. The aim of this study was to explore the potential use of TMG parameters (muscle radial deformation [Dm], time of contraction [Tc], delay time [Td], deformation rate until 10% [V10] and 90% [V90]) to detect neuromuscular acute fatigue-related responses during a duathlon compared to well-known bio… Show more

“…The Vrd increases in studies that analysed LD races (García‐Manso et al, 2011; Giovanelli et al, 2016) yet these authors do not contemplate this variable, so we have calculated the Vrd with their data. Similar findings were reported by Rojas‐Valverde et al (2021) after a simulated duathlon. In our study, we have also found increases in Vrd in both muscles after competing in the LD Triathlon World Championship, especially in VL and in males.…”

“…Time‐related parameters (Tc, Td and Ts) have been previously studied in long‐term efforts such as marathons (Gutiérrez‐Vargas et al, 2020), ultra‐marathons (Millet et al, 2002), uphill‐marathons (Giovanelli et al, 2016), ultra‐endurance triathlons (García‐Manso et al, 2011) and duathlons simulation (Rojas‐Valverde et al, 2021). However, there does not seem to be a consensus between these studies.…”

“…All protocols for the assessment of neuromuscular and mechanical characteristics using TMG followed the processes previously reported (Gutiérrez-Vargas et al, 2018;Rojas-Valverde et al, 2018;Sánchez-Ureña et al, 2018). TMG parameters reliability has been proven, obtaining excellent inter-rater results by the evaluators for Dm, ICC=0.98; Tc, ICC=0.918; Td, ICC=0.923 (Rojas-Valverde et al, 2020).…”

“…Examples of the technologies that have emerged as an option to control and monitor different phases of sports programming are tensiomyography [3], inertial measurement devices [4], locomotion tracking systems [5], mobile applications [6], oximeters [7], and heart rate monitors [8]. These technologies provide efficient and effective information for daily monitoring of the effect of changes in physical load prescription, the effectiveness of certain rehabilitation protocols, or the efficiency of recovery and sports physical readaptation processes.…”
