Detection of online PD signals in XLPE cables using the Bhattacharyya distance

Abstract: Partial discharge (PD) signal detection can be used for insulation monitoring of power system equipment.Online PD detection as a main task of insulation monitoring for different power system equipment is a difficult procedure when environmental noise is taken into account. This paper proposes a new scheme based on the Bhattacharyya distance approach with the main goal of detecting the PD signals in cross-linked polyethylene cables. The proposed method, as a preprocessing tool, can be used for detection of PD s… Show more

“…Sensitivity is expressed in unit millivolts (mV) or apparent charge in picocoulombs (pC) with a minimum magnitude [9]. Ghaedi et al [40] mentioned that different parameters, such as currents, voltages or temperatures, could be monitored in the on-line mode detection, leading to quick and accurate fault detection.…”

“…In other studies researchers discovered that the PD detection with online techniques needs the sensors' sensitivity with wide bandwidth, since PD signals can be distorted if the bandwidth is narrow (Fukunaga et al, 1992;Mulroy et al, 2012;Wei et al, 2000). Moreover, other parameters like voltages, currents and temperature can be monitored on-line to determine a defected portion of the cable (Abdullah et al, 2020(Abdullah et al, , 2021Ghaedi et al, 2016). This paper presents a comparative analysis on location, quantification and detection of three potential on-line techniques to detect PD activity within the cable joint.…”
