Detection of stress and the effects of central nervous system depressants by gastrointestinal smooth muscle electromyography in wakeful rats

Abstract: The smooth muscle EMG instrument can measure the level of acute stress and is applicable for the investigation of central nervous system affecting drugs through the GI tract in awake rats. This is the first tool to measure the stress response via the GI tract reactions. The technique may open a new perspective in the diagnosis and therapy of psychosomatic disorders.

“…Significant increase of the myoelectric power was found on the small intestinal pattern after a diet with increased amount of fibre [ 29 ]. Group of Robert Gáspár [ 30 ] used electromyography to record slow-waves myoelectric signals of the stomach, small intestine and large bowel to study stress-induced gastrointestinal dysmotility changes in awake rats. This study enabled to assess gastrointestinal changes as a consequence of dysregulation in the gut-brain axis.…”

“…"Based on these findings, they concluded that the neurotic personality of athletes could influence their cognitive and physiological responses in a competition" (BALYAN et al, 2016). Szűcs et al (2018) the effects of stress on the central nervous system and gastrointestinal smooth muscle depressants electromyography detected in rats. In the functional gastrointestinal (GI) tract, slow-wave myoelectric signals can be detected by electromyography (EMG).…”

“…The changes in the myoelectric activity of the GIT were followed with SMEMG in parallel with the mechanical contractions in anaesthetised rats using a strain gauge tool. Another SMEMG experiment was carried out in awake rats, measuring GIT activity under normal and stressed conditions [ 19 ].…”
