Determinants and prevalence of e-cigarette use throughout the European Union: a secondary analysis of 26 566 youth and adults from 27 Countries

Abstract: A substantial number of EU adults have ever used e-cigarettes. Ever users were more likely to be younger, current smokers, or past-year quit attempters. These findings underscore the need to evaluate the potential long term impact of e-cigarette use on consumer health, cessation and nicotine addiction and formulate a European framework for e-cigarette regulation within the revised EU Tobacco Product Directive.

“…It is not absolutely certain, but young people seem to be more willing to use e -cigarettes than traditional cigarettes. [35][36][37] The current prevalence of tobacco smoking and the state of the tobacco epidemic in the population is a result of different processes such as initiation, continuation, and quitting tobacco smoking. The average age of smoking initiation depends on the country, income, education, or age of the respondents.…”

“…In an era where traditional tobacco smoking is experiencing a decline, e-cigarette usage is dramatically increasing, attracting both former tobacco smokers and never smokers 1,2 . Although e-cigarette use has been widely reported to be experimented with as a smoking cessation tool, it still lacks the scientific evidence to be considered as one 3 .…”
