Determinants of adaptation to climate variability among farming households in Tyhume Valley communities, Eastern Cape province, South Africa

Abstract: Purpose This paper aims to determine factors affecting adaptation to climate variability on crop production among farming households in Tyhume Valley. Design/methodology/approach This study conducted an empirical analysis of the impact of adaptation on crop yield of farming households and estimated the factors affecting adaptation to climate variability on farming households. The analysis used primary data from 205 farming households practicing crop production in Tyhume Valley communities. Findings Based o… Show more

“…Small-holder farmer used different adaptation strategies such as irrigation, agro-chemical application and drought resistant varieties with integrating of modern and local knowledge systems and technologies to facilitate in the forest-savanna transitional zone of Ghana [ 20 ]. The adaptation measures adopted by the farming households include irrigation, crop rotation, and changing crop variety in Tyhume Valley communities, Eastern Cape Province, South Africa [ 21 ]. Early maturity crop varieties, use of terraces and intercropping are the most common adaptation strategies to Climate variability and change in Mbeere South, Meru South, and Maara Sub-Counties in Kenya [ 5 ].…”

“…However, the recent trend shows that the water demand in Africa by far surpasses its availability, causing a threat to the lives and livelihoods of dwellers of the continent who depend directly and indirectly on agriculture for survival (Castells-Quintana et al , 2018; Tadesse, 2010; Serdeczny et al , 2016). A related study Nhemachena et al (2020), Mtintsilana et al (2021), stressed that southern Africa will experience a decline in rainfall and irrigated water supply. The aforesaid situation will adversely affect food security in that region, thus leading to drought, water stress, reduced yields and, consequently, a food crisis.…”

“…Poverty may be regarded as a puzzle, as it leads and is influenced mainly to and by problems such as income inequality, unemployment, high vulnerability to disasters, poor health, crime and lack of education. Poverty is also negatively influenced by climate change, since it may be associated with reductions in agricultural yields or crop failure (Ubisi et al, 2017, Mtintsilana, Akinyemi andZhou 2021), droughts or in some cases to floods, which may cause significant damages to properties, and endanger livelihoods, representing a set of "poverty traps" (Leal Filho, 2019).…”
