The energy sector is one of the most important industrial sectors, especially in the era of depleting sources of mineral fuels, climate-related threats resulting from negative effects of energy production from fossil fuels on the natural environment, and the associated need to develop energy sources based on renewable sources. Hence, the financial performance of firms in the energy sector, especially the largest firms, is an important research issue. The purpose of this paper is to determine the financial position of the largest firms in the energy sector listed by Forbes Global, 2000 and their impact on the command and control (C&C) functions of cities. In this paper, we present a index of potential for selected cities based on revenue from sales, net profits, assets, and market value for selected sectors of the economy (CCI). Research has shown that the energy sector is one of the leading sectors in the world economy, both in terms of corporate financial performance and as a whole. However, the energy sector is a dominant sector in relatively few cities around the world (Beijing, Moscow, Houston, the Hague). At the same time, the energy sector is considered not very stable relative to other sectors of the economy. Given the increasing importance of the largest firms in this sector in shaping the command and control function of cities, it would be reasonable to combine the forecasting of their financial performance with a focus on its impact on the command and control function of cities in order to evaluate patterns associated with this function for leading cities in the world.

Największe przedsiębiorstwa należące do sektora energetycznego odgrywają znaczną rolę zarówno w gospodarce światowej, jak i w tworzeniu funkcji kontrolno-zarządczej (K-Z) miast. Celem artykułu jest określenie udziału największych firm sektora energetycznego w tworzeniu funkcji K-Z miast w latach 2006–2018 oraz jego przestrzenne zróżnicowanie na świecie. W związku z tym szczegółowo przeanalizowano firmy znajdujące się na liście Forbes Global 2000 na tle przedsiębiorstw z pozostałych sektorów tworzących funkcję K-Z miast. Wyniki badań wskazują, że sektor energetyczny najszybciej rozwija się w miastach chińskich, jednak nie ma on zbyt dużego znaczenia w najważniejszych ośrodkach miejskich pod względem funkcji K-Z, co może być związane z szybszym rozwojem innych sektorów. Jednocześnie jest on bardzo ważny w mniejszych miastach. Wobec malejącego znaczenia przedsiębiorstw reprezentujących tradycyjny sektor energetyczny należy opracować prognozy dla tego sektora i jego wpływu na funkcję K-Z miast. Nowym zagadnieniem badawczym będzie również wypracowanie metod, które pozwoliłyby określić wpływ przyszłych recesji na kondycję finansową i funkcję K-Z firm sektora energetycznego.

The largest companies that are part of the energy sector are defined by Forbes as those associated with the production of energy from nonrenewable sources and they play a very significant role in the world economy and in the generation of the command and control (C & C) function of cities. No comprehensive studies are available at the present time illustrating changes in financial performance in relation to the share of the largest firms in the energy sector in terms of their role in the generation of the C & C function. Thus, the aim of the paper is to show changes in financial performance and the impacts of energy sector companies on the C & C function of cities as well as to show spatial variances in the sector’s geography. The energy sector is developing most rapidly in Chinese cities, although it does not play a major role in the most important cities in the world via its impact on the C & C function—this may be due to rapid growth in other sectors of the economy. It is, however, very important in smaller cities. On the other hand, a large share of the energy sector involved in the development of renewable sources of energy may disturb the position of cities whose C & C function relies on energy sector companies. Thus, forecasts are needed for the sector and its impact on the command and control function of cities for the period of transition from nonrenewable sources to renewable ones. One new area of research is the formulation of methods that would allow the determination of the effects of economic recessions in the future on the financial health and C & C function impacts of the energy sector.
