Determinants of Health-Related Quality of Life in Taiwanese Middle-Aged Women Stroke Survivors

Abstract: We found that female stroke survivors' level of stroke severity and negative appraisal-impact of stroke are significant predictors of the stroke survivor's quality of life. In addition to assisting women in their PF rehabilitation, rehabilitation nurses also should help to develop survivors' self-care confidence as a means to avoid the recurrence of stroke.

“…Further, there is a need for longitudinal research on the mental health changes in middle‐age women stroke survivors (Pai et al . ). Thus, the objectives of our study were to examine the health‐related quality of life (HRQOL) of middle‐aged women stroke survivors and their informal caregivers’ health at one and six months after stroke and to determine the factors that affect HRQOL of stroke survivors and the psychological health of their informal caregivers.…”

“…The increasing demand for elderly care in Taiwan and the changing family structures and competing roles for women have directly influenced the health of the caregivers and care-receivers [ 33 ]. If female family members experience a stroke event, their family’s equilibrium is disrupted; this affects their overall quality of life [ 34 ]. In our study, we noted that, in the high-intensity rehabilitation group, women were at a lower risk of developing PU.…”

“…1) is a now widely recognised universal model in the academic community that describes the causal relationships and pathways of action between the basic concepts of health-related quality of life. They argue that this model emphasises that the health of an individual or group is the result of a combination of their own and the environment in which they live. The model consists of ve main factors: biological and psychological variables, symptom status, functional status, general health perceptions and overall quality of life, while each factor exists on a complex continuum of social, physiological and psychological variables, with individual and environmental characteristics in uencing all but the biological and psychological variables [15] .Although the relationships of variables in the model may be bidirectional and the formulated relationships are transient, the model has been validated in a wide range of chronic diseases, such as female stroke survivors, heart failure patients, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and diabetic patients, and provides a valuable reference for clinicians and researchers [16][17][18][19] .…”
