Determinants of Household Energy Saving Behaviour: An Application of the Goal Framing Theory

Abstract: Households are an important group that can be targeted to help reduce energy consumption and mitigate climate change. Drawing on the Goal Framing Theory (GFT), the study investigated the determinants of household energy (electricity) saving behaviour. The study examined the direct effects of the three principal constructs of the GFT (gain motivation, normative motivation and hedonic motivation) on household electricity saving behaviour. In addition, the study investigated the mediating effects of normative and… Show more

“…Regarding the social dimension, it can be observed that an increasing number of studies try to apply well-established behavioral theories to the topic to overcome existing research and action gaps. Among these, the theory of planned behavior (TPB) recurs the most, followed by the goal framing theory (GFT) [157][158][159][160][161][162][163][164][165]. It is frequently observed that intentions are the most direct contributors to actions and behaviors, and that they can be predicted by attitude, social norms, and especially perceived behavioral control (a feeling that one can act successfully).…”

Chance for Savings and Role of Users' Behavior Nowadays, the majority of researchers in the field agree that occupants can strongly affect the energy demand, either acting on the physical features of the building or changing energy use practices [39,40].…”
