Determinants of Land Use/Cover Change in the Iberian Peninsula (1990–2012) at Municipal Level

Abstract: This work analyzes the determinants associated with main land use/cover changes in the Iberian Peninsula during the 1990–2012 period using a decision tree model. Our main objective is to identify broad-scale patterns that associate the characteristics of geographic areas with the dominant land use/cover change process based on CORINE Land Cover (Coordination of Information on the Environment) and defined in a previously published work. Biophysical, structural and socioeconomic variables were considered as pote… Show more

“…The change in urban land-use structure, and the orderliness and rationality of land-use, are closely related to the urbanization process [23]. A review of related research on urbanization and land-use transition in recent years shows that current studies mainly focus on the role of urbanization in certain dimensions of land-use, such as land-use structure [25,26], land-use efficiency [27] and land-use intensity [28,29]. The effects of land-use transition mainly include the socioeconomic effect [30][31][32] and the eco-environmental effect [33][34][35].…”

“…. in the intensity of use of agricultural areas have probably been among the most significant" among ongoing land changes [4]. Intensity changes in agriculture and food systems (hence agri-food systems) thus combine with urbanization and climate change as the major drivers of land system transformations in Spain and the Mediterranean [1,2,5].…”

“…The framework is focused on three themes (Pathways 1-3) and corresponding topics (in boxes). First, we draw on a subset of the above publications (e.g., [1,2,4,5,21,23,24]) to sketch Pathway 1 that guides our research on links between intensification-related transformations of distinct agri-food land systems in Spain and the farm work activities of immigrants (Pathway 1).…”
